ServicesHail Damage Repair
Hail Damage Repair in Los Alamitos
Hail does not always leave obvious holes. It bruises asphalt shingles, cracks concrete and clay tile, and dents the metal that guards your roof's seams. We find each hit, photograph it and repair what lets water reach the deck below your home.

What Hail Does to a Roof, and What We Fix
Hail is not frequent in Southern California. When a winter cold front does drop it, even pea-sized stones can matter on a roof that is already 15 or 20 years old. On asphalt shingles, a hailstone knocks off the ceramic granules and can fracture the fiberglass mat underneath. That bruise looks like a small dark spot. Once the asphalt is exposed, sun breaks it down quickly, and the spot becomes a crack and then a leak.
Tile behaves differently. Concrete and clay tile resist small hail, but a stone that strikes a corner or a tile that was already brittle can crack or chip. The tile itself is not the waterproof layer; the underlayment beneath it is. A cracked tile lets rain and UV reach that underlayment, which on many older homes is original felt near the end of its life.
Hail damage repair means finding those spots before they leak, then replacing shingles, tiles, flashing or vents so the roof sheds water the way it was built to. When the damage is widespread, we explain that plainly and talk through Roof Replacement as an option instead of patching around the problem.
What Our Hail Damage Repair Covers
- Shingle-by-shingle bruise check
- We press suspect spots by hand. A hail bruise feels soft, like a bruise on fruit, while normal wear does not. We mark each hit with chalk so you can see the pattern in photos.
- Cracked and chipped tile replacement
- We lift damaged concrete or clay tiles, look at the underlayment below and set matching tiles back in place. If the underlayment is torn or brittle, we show you before quoting more.
- Soft metal and vents
- Dents in vent caps, pipe jacks, flashing and drip edge tell us how large the hail was and which direction it came from. Bent flashing can open a seam, so we reseat or replace it.
- Skylights and gutters
- Plastic skylight domes can craze or crack from impact. We check them along with your gutters and downspouts, which often take the most visible dents. Our Gutters page covers replacement in more detail.
- A photo record for your claim
- You get dated photos of every marked hit, each damaged component and the overall roof. That record is useful whether or not you decide to file with your insurer.
Signs Hail May Have Damaged Your Roof
Granules collecting at downspouts
A sudden pile of sand-like granules at the bottom of a downspout after a storm usually means shingles lost their protective coating.
Dents in gutters or vent caps
If the soft metal on your home shows round dents, the shingles or tile above took the same hits.
Pieces of tile in the yard
Chips or broken corners on the ground near the eaves point to cracked tiles on the roof that can let water reach the underlayment.
Dings on cars, patio covers or AC fins
Damage to nearby objects is a good sign hail was large enough to bruise a roof.
New water stains weeks later
Hail damage often leaks long after the storm, once sun has opened bruised shingles. A fresh ceiling stain is worth a look, and our Roof Leak Repair page explains how we trace it.
How a Hail Repair Moves Along
- 1
Free roof inspection
We cover every slope, check the metal, gutters and skylights, and chalk each impact. When the attic is accessible we look there as well, since early leaks appear there first.
- 2
Findings, photos and a written estimate
We review the photos with you, separate cosmetic marks from damage that will leak, and give you a free written estimate itemizing each repair. If you file, we work directly with your insurance claim and can walk the roof with the adjuster to show what we marked.
- 3
Sourcing a close match
We order shingles or tile as near in color and profile as current products allow. If a product has been discontinued, you learn that before the work starts, not after.
- 4
Making the repair
Plants and walkways get covered, damaged shingles or tile come off, and we check the deck and underlayment before installing new material with proper nailing and sealed flashing. If the scope becomes a reroof, it gets a city permit and inspection.
- 5
Cleanup and after photos
We sweep the yard with a magnet for nails, haul away all debris and send you photos of the finished repair.

What Moves the Cost of Hail Repair
The price depends on how many areas took damage and what roof you have. A few cracked tiles is a small job; bruising across every slope is a different conversation. Your estimate lists each item so you can compare it to an insurance scope line by line.
- Roofing material
- Matching clay or older concrete tile can take time to source, while asphalt shingles are easier to find but are replaced in larger sections to keep seams sealed.
- How widespread the damage is
- Damage limited to one slope is repaired locally. Hits on every slope may make replacement the more sensible choice.
- Condition underneath
- Torn underlayment or soft decking found during repair adds work, and we photograph it before doing anything extra.
- Metal, skylights and gutters
- Replacing dented vents, flashing, skylight domes or gutter runs is priced as separate line items.
Common Hail Damage Questions
Something not covered here? (562) 374-8848
Is small hail enough to hurt a roof?
It can be, particularly on older asphalt shingles already worn thin of granules by the sun. Little stones may just bruise the surface, but those bruises often crack later. A newer roof usually handles small hail fine, so we inspect before suggesting any work.
Do I call my insurer first, or get the roof inspected?
Plenty of homeowners get an inspection before calling their insurer. Our free inspection tells you if the hail did real damage or just left surface marks, so you can decide knowing the facts. You keep the photos and notes regardless. If you do file, we work directly with your insurance claim, and your policy and adjuster determine what's covered.
Will the replacement shingles look like the rest?
We get as close as we can on brand, color and profile. Colors drift from one production run to the next and some lines are discontinued, so a perfect match isn't always possible. We bring samples and tell you honestly how close it will look.
Can only the broken tiles be swapped out?
In most cases. Single concrete or clay tiles can come out and be replaced without disturbing the rest. If the underlayment below is giving out, though, new tiles by themselves won't stop leaks, and we'll point that out on the roof. Our Tile Roofing page covers underlayment work.
Is there a way to spread out the cost?
Yes. Financing is available through Service Finance Company, subject to credit approval, and we go over it while reviewing your estimate.
